In Buncombe County, we are fortunate to have a network of safety net providers who offer acute care, primary care, and case management services for lower income adults and children. In the Summer of 2009, Buncombe County government embarked on a partnership with a small group of these providers to improve patient access to services. A pilot group of safety net providers have begun begin using a shared eligibility and enrollment system for public assistance called Medicaider.
Once the new screening and eligibility system is in broader use, people who come into a clinic for low-cost health care can also find out if they might qualify for other services such as children’s health insurance or food stamps. Determining eligibility will let families and individuals know if it is worth their time to apply to these additional programs.
The Medicaider system uses technology to link patient information within safety net providers so that services are delivered effectively and without duplication.
