Access to health care
1 out of every 5 adults in
Buncombe County
has no health insurance.
Lack of insurance is costly for both
individuals and our community as
a whole.
Health insurance helps pay for the
health care services that many
Americans receive. Yet
50 million people were without
health insurance in America in
2009.
To access care, uninsured
residents must either pay
out-of-pocket for services or
navigate a patchwork of free and
donated care through charity care
facilities and community health
centers.
Uninsured individuals often delay
or forgo needed health care
because of its cost and,
consequently, face worse health
care outcomes as a result.
Safety Net system of health care
Community members who have no
insurance or who do not have a healthcare
provider often rely on the Safety Net system
of care. In the Asheville area, this Safety Net
is made up of many different clinics and
organizations that are working together to
ensure access to care.
